Symptom

Penile curvature

Penile curvature is often the most visible sign of Peyronie's disease, but timing matters more than the angle alone.

A lifelong mild curve is different from a new or changing curve. Peyronie's is more likely when curvature develops over weeks or months, especially when it appears alongside pain, a firm plaque, narrowing, shortening, or difficulty with sex.

The angle is rarely the most useful number. Whether the curve is changing, whether it hurts, and whether it is interfering with sex tells a clinician more than a measurement on its own.

Signs that deserve attention

  1. A new or worsening bend

A curve that has appeared over weeks or months, or one that is getting worse, matters more than a curve that has been there for life.

  2. Pain during erection

Discomfort with erection often suggests the disease is still active. It usually fades once the condition stabilises.

  3. Function over appearance

What the curve does is more important than what it looks like. A modest angle that disrupts sex deserves the same attention as a dramatic one that doesn't.

  4. Difficulty with penetration

Buckling, instability, or pain during sex is a meaningful clinical detail and worth raising directly with a clinician.

  5. A narrowing, indentation, or hourglass shape

These changes can affect function more than the curve itself. They belong in the same conversation but should be named separately.

Next step

Seek evaluation if the curve is new, changing, painful, or affecting sex.

Most men wait years before booking. There is no embarrassment in being early. Urologists see Peyronie's regularly and treat it without ceremony.
